PUBLIC NOTCEMarch 25, 2009 Federal economic-stimulus money could provide the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with an additional Deputy, new computers, investigative tools and other much needed law enforcement equipment with no increase in local taxes. In all, the WCSO is asking the county for permission to apply for $312,637.00 from four economic-stimulus grant categories. The COPS grant, totaling about $107,010.00, would pay for one new deputy position for three years. It would also require the county to keep the new Sheriff's Deputy on the payroll for a full year after the grant expires. The WCSO wants the county to make the positions permanent, which means the county would continue to pay for the new Deputy after the one year required by the grant. When approved by the county, the WCSO will be applying for one grant under the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and grants in three categories under a Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) competitive grant program. All the grants fall under the U.S. Department of Justice. The JAG application will be made available for review by the governing body of Wayne County, Tennessee effective March 27, 2009. The JAG application was made public and an opportunity to comment was provided to citizens and neighborhood or community organizations effective today March 25, 2009. Grant documents are available for public review in the County Mayors Office. The WCSO plans to use the BJA FY 09 Recovery Act Rural Law Enforcement Assistance: Combating Rural Crime-- $79,088.42 to purchase patrol rifles, magazines, weapons lights, in-car digital camera systems, digital cameras, digital recorders, evidence cameras, a ductless fume hood, evidence collecting supplies, and instructor training. The WCSO is also asking for $114,204.00 from the BJA FY 2009 Recovery Act Assistance to Rural Law Enforcement to Combat Crime and Drugs: Facilitating Rural Justice Information Sharing. to adopt a Microsoft SQL Server based Law Enforcement Management software suite with integrated, narcotic investigations management, and jail management applications and to install a new computer network to support the system. The final grant will be used to install Global Positioning System based Automatic Vehicle Location Systems for 14 patrol vehicles under the BJA FY 09 Recovery Act Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program After Sheriff Wilson took office in 2006, the Wayne County WCSO siezed almost 6 pounds of meth, 8 pounds of marijuana, and over $37,000 in cash in what would prove to be Tennessee's second largest Meth bust. THE WCSO has continued this fight against drugs but are greatly in need of assistance through the JAG Program. The application requires a 30-day period for the governing body and the public to review of the proposed application, which includes the proposed purchases by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. |
